Sullivan Co. Democrat : Wed 9 Oct 1918: W. Coe Branning of Atco, a young man well and favorably known in this section, is now stationed with the U.S. Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. He says there are some Sullivan county boys there, where he went from Charleston, S.C., some four weeks ago. When he reached Pensacola they put him at work assembling and installing the new Liberty motors in the H-165 hydroplanes. These are equipped with two Liberty motors of 400 horsepower each and carry six people. My squadron is the largest aviation squadron in the world. "Coes" address is W. C. Branning, U.S. Naval Air Station, Squadron 6, Pensacola, Florida.

BIOGRAPHY OF MR. WALTER C. BRANNING 27Jul1961 Three score and 11 years, 7 months and 19 days has elapsed since Mr. Walter C. Branning popped his little head into this world. To be exact, on the 8th day of December, 1889 Walt was as surprised at the sight of things as were his parents at the sight of him. However, in spite of it all his dad and mother were very proud of their new offspring.

Walt's early childhood was a normal one. He displayed, on many occasions, his own personal knack of getting into and out of the Huck Finn type of devilment. He was not classified in those days as a juvenile delinquent, just a little "hellion". On Halloween, he managed with little effort on his part to upset his share of "out-houses". Sometimes it was quite unfortunate for the person inhabiting the abode during the tilting action. Other Halloween pranks, upon some of his more favorite friends included placing sleighs, buggies, and other farm equipment high upon the roof of a barn or hiding it within the largest tree in the immediate 1 mile vicinity. He also relieved the farmers of their excess field corn, pumpkins, squash and turnips during the Halloween festivities.

He advanced from the hellion stage to a more reserve station in life upon graduation from high school. In 1909 and 1910 he taught school at Bidwell Hill public school in Wayne County, PA where he beat 1st to 8th grade education into 46 pupils. In 1911 and 1916 he transferred to the West Damascus public school in Wayne County where he tried his luck with 28 pupils, in grade 1 to 7. During his 2 years at Bidwell Hill, he studied electricity at the New York Electrical School. Upon completion of his courses there he gave up teaching and in 1912 entered Pennsylvania State College. He remained at Penn State until 1914, during which time he majored in electrical engineering. Walt's two year tenure of learning at Penn State included courses in:

Chemistry Calculus Machine Design Algebra Surveying Mechanical Drawing Geometry Geometrical Drawing Trigonometry French

After his college education, Walt went to work for the Fairbanks-Morse Co., from 1914 to 1916. From November of 1917 to December of the same year he was employed by the Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C., while at the Bureau Walt decided to enlist in the U.S.Navy. The first World War was in progress at the time; so, he hastened to the Recruiting Station in Washington, D.C. The line of volunteers was several blocks long; so, he went to Baltimore, and on December 14, 1917 he enlisted. He had visions of being aboard a battle-wagon. He asked the Recruiting Officer when he would be called for service and the R.O. said about 5 January 1918. Walt immediately resigned from the Bureau of Standards, but to his dismay he wasn't called until June of 1918 and low and behold they placed him in the Naval Air Force, Squadron 6, at Pensacola, Florida where he was crew chief and machine gunner on Navy flying boats. (Ask him sometime how the bomb sight and bomb racks worked in those days.)

On September 30th 1921, as a 2nd class AMM, Walt received an honorable discharge. He immediately entered self-employment as an electrical contractor where he remained until 1940. One of his major contracting jobs was the complete installation of a hydro-electric lighting system for the borough of Narrowsburg, N.Y. This job required the installation of a water turbine, 25EVA, 2300 Volt AC Alternator, complete with switchboards, transformers, three mile of high voltage cable and all the accessories required in this type of system.

From 1941 to 1947 he worked as an electrician at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and going to Radar School. On 19 Aug 1947 Walt began his career in Civil Service here at Mechanicsburg. He was employed as a CAF-7 in the Electrical Section of the old Catalog Branch, Code 752. He later worked in the Electrical Branch (737) of the Technical Division, and on 26 July 1959 he was welcomed aboard the new MAP Branch, Code 731, of the Technical Division.

Ironically, it is two years and one day since Walt became a MAP expert. Within these two years he has established an everlasting friendship with all personnel of the MAP Branch. He was my ships navigation equipment expert, which includes alidades, gyro compass, dead reckoning, magnesyn compass and submarine periscopes. The job function on these equipments he performed with skill and accuracy. Code 731 is proud of the effort you have induced into the development of the Ships Parts Integrated Lists. I personally want to thank you for a "Job Well Done" and on behalf of the employees of the MAP branch wish to present you with a little token of our friendship on this very happy and yet sad occasion. Good Luck and Best Wishes for many happy years of retirement, I only wish you were 20 years younger, so we could utilize your knowledge and services. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Walter Coe Branning Damascus No 4 -1917 Honor Roll of Wayne Countys young men listed in Wayne Co. More died from flu than from bullets that year… That was the sad truth in America in 1918. World War I was raging, but so was an influenza epidemic like the world had never seen.
