New Zealand BDM Registration 1930/8811 Gow Walter 76Y The death occurred at his home this morning of Mr Walter Gow, at the age of seventy-six years. Mr Gow was born in 1854, and arrived in New Zealand when eleven or twelve years of ago. His father, the Rev John Gow, was a minister of the Presbyterian Church, and, after occupying pulpits at Lyttelton and Hokitika, he came to St. Andrew’s Church, DunediN, in 1871. He remained there till 1878. Mr Walter Gow. as a youth, joined the staff of Briscoe and Co. Ltd., and ultimately became manager of the Dunedin branch a position he held tor some years. Later he resigned from Briscoe and Co.’s and became business manager of the Castle Hill Coal Company under the late Mr Robert Lee. He acquired an interest in Thomson, Bndger, and Co. Ltd. in 1896, and was manager from that year until he retired in 1911. Even after his retirement the deceased retained his interest in the company, and was president of the New Zealand Hardware Merchants’ Guild in 1921. He was a director of. the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition , the only surviving director now being Sir John Roberts. He was also a director of Hogg and Co. Ltd, and of Donagliy and Co. Ltd. He was a member of the Taxation Revision Commission and secretary of the Otago Importers and Shippers' Association, in that position he was mainly responsible for the Sea Carriage of Goods Act. Mr Gow always took a keen interest in the public life of the city. He occupied a seat on the Mornington Borough Council prior to the borough’s amalgamation with the city. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, being a member of the committee from 1888 to 1895. from 1902 to 1907. from 1911 to 1919, and from 1921 to 1923. He president of the chamber in 1895, 1907. and 1918. The deceased was a member of the Otago Harbour Board from 1907 to 1910, and also from 1925 ti l ' the present time. He was chairman of the board last year. Mr Gow was always a strong Presbyterian, and his loss will be much felt in the affairs of that church. He was a deacon of St. Andrew’s Church from 1882-83. and had been an elder since 1884. He was session clerk from 1886 to 1898. and was a representative ,of that church on the Dunedin Presbytery He was chairman of the Finance Committee of the Dunedin Presbytery, and was for many years treasurer of the Otago sustentation fund, a position to which he devoted much valuable time and in which his profound business ability stood him in good stead. He was also a member of the General Assembly of New Zealand and a member of the Otago Presbyterian Church Board of Property. The deceased was also a member-of St. Margaret’s Presbyterian College Council and a member of Columba College Board of Governors. (Evening Star, 31 October 1930) |
