About Walter Lawrence Raappana

Lifelong local resident Walter L. Raappana Jr., 80, of Kelso died May 16, 2012, at St. John Medical Center. He was born April 26, 1932, in Longview, to Walter L. and Esther (Laulainen) Raappana. He graduated from Kelso High School in 1951. On Nov. 16, 1957, Walter married Marilyn Blakemore. He was a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He served two years in the Army and worked as a longshoreman. He was a member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and Retired Longshoreman (Pensioners). Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing, picking blackberries, family gatherings, walking through his property, visiting with family and friends, playing cards, and watching Mariners and Seahawks games. Walter is survived by his wife, Marilyn Raappana at home; a daughter, Lori Smith of Gresham, Ore.; three sons, Greg Raappana of Centralia, Dave Raappana of Tulsa, Okla., and Jeff Raappana of Kalama; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and twin sisters, Arlene Hausserman and Ilene Sickels. A celebration of Walter’s life is planned from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Longshore Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care Center. Arrangements are by Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park & Crematory.
