Walter Jonathan Rissler was born, January 18, 1876 in Putnam County, Indiana. He attended the country school, known as the McCullough School, thru the fifth grade. Walter worked on his father's farm until he was of age.

On February 19,1899 Walter married Nina Estella Smith, who was born March 10, 1880 and died March 2, 1963. Walter and Nina rented a farm in Clay County from Al HURT, a Greencastle banker. Walter was a farmer and horse trader until 1906.

Their first child, James, was born on January 18,1900 and was the third generation to be born on January 18. In the spring of 1906 the family moved to a farm about a mile Northeast of Harmony, IN. Walter had purchased the farm from George McIntyre. Walter farmed and did carpentry until around 1912, when he went to work at Continental Clay Company at Brazil Indiana as a pattern maker. Walter worked there until the company closed in the early l930's. Walter went back to carpentry work and farming until his death on December 8, 1949. Walter was active in politics as a Republican Party Committeeman. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Knightsville Indiana and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge (IOOF) at Harmony, Indiana. He was a member and staunch supporter of the E .U .B. Church at Harmony, Indiana. Walter is buried in Croys Creek Cemetery.
