About Walter Nathan Rothschild, Jr.

Walter N. Rothschild Jr., who stepped down as president of the Abraham & Straus department store chain to pursue a civic career, died Friday at Huntington Hospital on Long Island. He was 83.

The cause was complications from surgery, his son, Trip, said.

After spending nine years as president of Abraham & Straus, Mr. Rothschild's decision to leave the corporate world in 1969 surprised his colleagues and generated a front-page story in The New York Times.

Mr. Rothschild, the great-grandson of a founder of Abraham & Straus, Abraham Abraham, represented the fourth generation of his family to serve as the company's president.

The chain, based in Brooklyn and widely known as A. & S., once comprised 18 department stores across the New York metropolitan region, but the name disappeared in 1995, when its parent company, Federated Department Stores Inc., converted the stores into branches of other chains like Macy's or Stern's.

Mr. Rothschild became chairman of the New York Urban Coalition from 1970 to 1973, then served as chairman of the National Urban Coalition from 1973 to 1977. He also sat on the state commission that investigated the Attica prison riots.

He was instrumental in the 1979 merger of St. Luke's Hospital and the Roosevelt Hospital Center and served as the combined entity's chairman from 1981 to 1987.

He also served two terms on the Harvard University Board of Overseers.

Born to Walter N. Rothschild and Carola Warburg Rothschild in 1920, Mr. Rothschild graduated cum laude from Harvard in 1942 before enlisting in the Army in World War II.

Besides his son, of New Milford, Conn., Mr. Rothschild is survived by his wife, Virginia, of Syosset, N.Y.; three daughters, Nina Rothschild-Utne of Minneapolis, Suzanne, of Arlington, Mass., and Jane, of Sydney, Australia; two sisters, Carol Noyes of Syosset and Phyllis Farley of Manhattan; and 10 grandchildren.

The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution announces with great sorrow the death June 20, 2003, of Honorary Member of the Corporation Walter N. "Bill" Rothschild, Jr. at Huntington Hospital on Long Island of complications from surgery. He was 83.

Rothschild was a long time WHOI Associate, joining the program in the early 1970s. He was elected an Honorary Member of the Corporation in 1992.

Born in 1920, he graduated from Harvard in 1942 with a BA degree before enlisting in the U.S Army in World War II.

The great grandson of a founder of the department store chain Abraham & Straus, Walter Rothschild was the fourth generation of his family to serve as the company's president. Walter Rothschild, Jr. was a Trustee of St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital Center and an Honorary Trustee of the Josiah Macy. Jr. Foundation and the US Trust Company of New York. He served as a director of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center's Operating Corporation, was a member of the Advisory Committee on the Arts at Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, and served on The President's Council of the United Hospital Fund.
