About Walter Sutton
Walter and Nancy Caroline (Eads) Sutton were married in Annapolis, Iron Co., MO on February 1, 1914 by Rev. J. A. Brewer. Their two children, Clarence and Clara, were twins. Researcher Connie Moretti (CWMorettiWaol.com) said that when Walter & Nancy first moved to Wyoming, Walter was a foreman for a refinery. After that he was employed by the Burlington Railroad. They moved back to Missouri in 1925 and Walter then began studying to be a minister. At some time later the family returned to Buffalo, Wyoming, where he pastored the Baptist Church from 1940-1946. The next move was to Casper, WY where he became the associate pastor for the First Southern Baptist Church in 1957.
Granddaughter Faye (Sutton) Thomas, in a 2002 email, remembered: "Walter Sutton worked on the railroad and drank and womanized until he found religion and then became a Baptist preacher. Half hour prayers at the dinner table with pounding fists and dishes jumping..."
Apparently Walter suffered from chronic kidney problems & rheumatoid arthritis for years. I have a copy of his obituary from the Billings (Montana) Gazette which states: "The Rev. Walter Sutton, 74, of Casper, former Greybull Baptist minister, died in Casper. Funeral services were held at the First Southern Baptist Church in Casper. He came to Greybull in 1912 and was employed by the Burlington Railroad. The family moved to Missouri in 1925 when he studied for the ministry. The family moved back to Greybull in the 1930's and he served as minister of the First Baptist Church. From 1940 until 1946 he was pastor of the Baptist Church in Buffalo. He went to Casper in 1946 and served as associate pastor of the First Southern Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, in Casper; one son Clarence Sutton of Billings, Montana; one daughter Mrs. Clara McNutt of Casper; four grandchildren; and five brothers."
