About Walter Frederic Utting

Walter Utting migrated from England to New Zealand.Walter was born in 1844. He was the son of Fredric Utting and Sarah Smith. He passed away in 1933. Walter Utting emigrated to New Zealand from England, arriving in 1860 on the RedJacket, along with his father Frederic James Utting. His father was a widower at the time and worked as a civil engineer and surveyor, initially in Auckland. He married Caroline Ellen Clark on 10 February 1868 in Auckland. She had arrived in Auckland in 1865 on board the Balaclava. Their marriage was a long one. They celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary in February 1928, and a photo and small article was published in the newspaper. At first Walter Utting was employed in New Zealand as an importation clerk, for Burnside and Company. He eventually became the oldest customhouse agent in Auckland. There are a number of passenger records showing he travelled a lot as part of his work (to Australia, elsewhere in New Zealand and the islands - See FamilySearch Passenger Lists). In around 1903 Walter left the firm of C MacArthur and Company, where he had been employed as an accountant for over 10 years, and started in partnership in a new venture - Vines, Utting and Purston. The firm were island traders. Walter Utting died in 1933 at the age of 89, and is buried in Hillsborough Cemetery, in Auckland, along with his wife Caroline. In his obituary it was noted that he acted as an anonymous benefactor for several addresses when there were difficult times.
