About Wambert, duke of Moselle [Fictitious Person]

Wambert, sometimes called duke of Moselle is a fictitious person, said to have been son of fictitious Adalbert and fictitious Argotta. He is said to have been the father of the possibly fictitious Ansbert the Senator.

Wambert is first named in Annales de la province et comté d'Haynau (1648) in an attempt to present a line from Clodion to Charlemagne. This genealogy is repeated in 1829 by Jacques de Guyse and Jean Lefèvre in their Histoire du Hainaut.

To my knowledge Wambert is not mentioned in any of the most reliable historical sources. He is mentioned by William Herbert whose transcribed work is available in part at <http://andrewgough.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=3311>. The original work is: William Herbert, "Attila, King of the Huns," London, Henry G. Bohn, 1838. This was also reprinted as "Works of the Hon. and Very Rev. William Herbert, Dean of Manchester, etc ... Vol III," London, H.G. Bohn, 1842. pp 425-432. The entire book is available online at <books.google.com/books?id=nogVAAAAYAAJ&pg> Herbert based his work on Johannes Bertelius, "Historia Luxemburgensis," Cologne, Published in Latin in 1605, Bertelius's work is based on questionable or unknown sources. Therefore, Wambert's existence may be more legendary than historical. Herbert calls Bertelius 'John Bertels.'
