About Warren De La Rue
Warren de la Rue (1815-1889)
Scientist and inventor. The son of printer, Thomas De La Rue, he entered his father's printing firm and having studied science, became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1850. In 1851, he invented an envelope-making machine. That same year he erected an observatory at Canonbury in London, which he moved to Cranford, Middlesex, in 1857. He became eminent in celestial photography and observed a solar eclipse in Spain, 1860 and sun-spots in 1862. He was also engaged in chemical research and received gold medals from the Astronomical and Royal Societies (1862 and 1864 respectively). He was also President of the Astronomical Society from 1867 to 1869 and 1879 to 1880.
