Wendy Ruth Sherman is an American professor and diplomat.
Sherman attended Smith College from 1967 to 1969 and graduated from Boston University in 1971. In 1976, she earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Maryland. Her early jobs included working as the director of Emily's List, the director of Maryland's office of child welfare, and the president and CEO of the Fannie Mae Foundation, an arm of Fannie Mae. - Chief of Staff for then Congresswoman Barbara Mikulski and campaign manager for Mikulski's first successful Senate campaign
- Special Secretary for Children and Youth in Maryland
- Director of Campaign '88 for the Democratic National Committee
- Partner in the political and media consulting firm of Doak, Shrum, Harris and Sherman (1991-1993)
- Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs under Warren Christopher (1993-1996)
- Special Advisor to the President and Secretary of State and North Korea Policy Coordinator during the Clinton Administration
- Advisor to Hillary Clinton's 2008 presidential campaign
- Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs under Hillary Clinton (2011-2015)
- Lead U.S. negotiator in the 2015 Iran agreement
She is a professor of public leadership and director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School. Additionally, she is a Senior Counselor at Albright Stonebridge Group and a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
On January 5, 2021, president-elect Joe Biden announced Sherman's nomination to serve as U.S. Deputy Secretary of State under Antony Blinken.
