Werner Buchner (1966 - 2021)

Brief overview:

Werner (55), a dairy farmer, of farm Boslaagte near Nanaga in the Eastern Cape, his wife Estelle and son Werner Jnr, were attacked by three armed perpetrators on 5th September 2021 at 18h30. Werner Snr was shot in the back and died at the scene. Estelle, who was attempting to shield her husband and son, was kicked and beaten by the attackers and both her arms were broken. Werner junior was shot in the leg.

Estelle and Werner were transported to a hospital in Port Elizabeth for treatment, where Werner Junior was stabilised and underwent surgery.

The perpetrators escaped with two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Agri Eastern Cape reported that the suspects are still at large and that the SAPS dog unit and other statutory forces were deployed to assist in the search.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohli said police are investigating a case of murder with additional charges of attempted murder and house robbery for further investigation.

"Our Dairy Industry has been dealt a tragic blow in the senseless murder of one of our most prominent dairy farmers in the Eastern Cape, Werner Buchner.

I was privileged to have known Werner for many years who served on a number of boards including holding the position of Chairman of Clover for a number of years. Werner, a qualified engineer was one of the brightest, most practical people that I have ever met, from being a very hands on farmer to writing a Dairy herd management program (WBFT) that we have all used for many years. Werner had amazing vision, an example being with climate change and the droughts experienced in his area he initiated the start of NFT, a collective of neighbouring farmers who pooled their farms, knowledge and resources to grow their business beyond their own farm boundaries. Today NFT has increased their cow herd, developed new farms and contributed significantly to the growth of our dairy industry in the Eastern Cape. In addition all four founder members remain best friends.

A golfing friend with whom myself, Mally and Iain played a number of rounds of golf together including a highlight tour to Scotland to play golf and watch the Ryder cup. Werner will be sorely missed by so many.

To the family, Stellie, Werner Jnr, Daniel and Fransie our thoughts, love and prayers go out to you during this difficult time, know that like you we mourn the loss of a wonderful friend and a pillar of strength in our community and Industry. Werner may you RIP knowing you touched so many."

Update 13/09/2021: Werner's classmates from Matric 1984 have raised a R75,000 reward for information that could lead to a successful prosecution.
