WILLARD E. SWIFT
Willard E. Swift, chairman of the board of United States Envelope Co. was found dead in bed at his Worcester home on Tuesday. Mr. Swift was 68. He was son of Henry D. Swift who with his brother, D. Wheeler Swift, went from West Falmouth to Worcester to found the envelope company. Willard E. Swift maintained the imposing family home in West Falmouth and owned other property here.
Mr. Swift was born in Worcester, son of a founder of the vast U. S. Envelope chain, Henry D. Swift and Emma Colburn Swift. He attended Worcester schools and graduated from Haverford college.
In 1903 he entered the employ of the envelope company and rose through minor positions in all departments to become assistant superintendent of the Logan Swift and Brigham division of the company. He later became mechanical superintendent of the chain and a member of the board of directors. He was made a member of the executive committee in 1923, and became vice-president in 1925.
Mr. Swift is credited with the design of much of the machinery now in use in U. S. Envelope plants. The company now includes a paper cup division, and is the largest envelope manufacturer in North America with valuation of more than $11 million. Mr. Swift was president of the company from 1929 to 1946 when he became chairman of the board.
He was director of Worcester YMCA vice-president and director of Worcester Boys' Club, director of Boston Mutual Fire Insurance company, Worcester Manufacturing Mutual Insurance company, and Hanneman Hospital; a member of the Worcester Club, Worcester Country Club, Economics Club, Foreign Policy Club, Newcomer Society Club of Worcester, and the committees of the Moses Brown school and the Lincoln School of Providence, R. I.
Survivors are his wife, Alice M. Swift; a daughter, Mrs. W. K. Ramsey, who was Miss Chrystelle Swift; and two sons, W. Everett Swift of West Falmouth and Arthur H. Swift of Worcester. Burial was planned for this afternoon at 3 P.M. in Friends burial ground in West Falmouth.
