The father of Edward P. Allen was William B. Allen, who was born in Green County, Kentucky, in 1803 and spent his life at Greensburg, Kentucky. He was a lawyer by profession, being a graduate of a seminary at Nashville, Tennessee, and of a law school. He was very prominent in Masonry, at one time served as grand master of the grand lodge of Kentucky. William B. Allen married Huldah Wilcox. She was born in Massachusetts of Puritan ancestry. Her forefathers had settled in New England during the seventeenth century. Her father Eli Wilcox possessed all the sturdy traits of the typical New Englander. William B. Allen and wife had the following children: Martha; Jennie, who married A. B. Nibbs; Harriet B., who married John Cunningham of Coles County, Illinois; Edward P.; Mary, who married William HUNTER; and Ella M., who is the only one of the children still living and is the widow of George W. Reed, her home being at Rock Island, Illinois.

Total records = 31. This cemetery is about a quarter mile north of the Greensburg City Cemetery. It is in back of the old Barrett red brick house. The Barrett's were among the first settlers of the town. There are several more large stones that are too heavy to lift to read the dates. (Courtesy of the Green County Library)

Wm. B. married Jane Pope Helm on 26 Feb 1823. They had Wm. B. Jr. b. 1825, Infant b. & d. 10 Mar 1828 and CDA b. <1830. Jane died 27 Feb 1836. Record from Barrett Family Cemetery in Greensburg bear out Jane's (altho she is listed as James) and Infants date of death. Wm. married Hulda Wilcox 1 Nov 1836. They had at least 7 offspring, including Edward Payson Allen. Hulda died 6 Jul 1855 and is also buried in the Barrett cemetery as are 3 or 4 of their children who didn't live more than a few months. Wm, then married Millie N. Baker either 19 Jun 1856 or 1 Nov. 1856. Millie had children from a previous marriage and then had 3 with Wm. There is also listed in the cemetery a daughter of Wm. B. and Jane P. by the name of Gibby Miller, b. 1 July 1829 d. Oct 1839. I don't understand the name, unless it was transcribed wrong. There is also a William Wilcox (son of W. B. and Hatte) b. 31 July 1824 d. 24 Aug 1824. I don't know if Hatte is suppose to be Hulda but given the history of the short lifespan of W. B. and Hulda's children, and his last name, it could be. Regardless, if it is W. B.'s son, he had an affair with someone shortly after he married Jane P. the above from Sam Overstreet at vickio@cwia.com
