About William Atkinson

WILLIAM ATKINSON, the son of Christopher Atkinson and Nancy Smith, was born in Sackville, New Brunswick in 1812. He married in Sackville (1) Phoebe Campbell, the daughter of Isaac Campbell and Ann Wry, who was also born in Sackville, N.B. They were converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) before 1850. In 1853, they and all of their living children emigrated to Utah with other Latter-day Saints from Canada and Europe. They settled in South Bountiful (now Woods Cross), Davis County, Utah. The family remained there, and William Atkinson d. there in 1879. Phoebe Campbell Atkinson d. there in 1904. They were the parents of 15 children. The first 14 were born in Sackville, New Brunswick, before the family left for Utah. The last was born in Bountiful, Utah.

In 1862, William Atkinson took a second (plural) wife. The practice of polygamy was encouraged in Utah by Latter-day Saints leaders at this time. (2) Sarah Ann Tingey b. in Lower Coldecott, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, England. She was the daughter of Henry Tingey and Ann Young, who were both born in England, and emigrated to Utah after their conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. William Atkinson and Sarah Ann Tingey Atkinson were the parents of 8 children, all born in Bountiful, Utah.

The Children of William Atkinson and Phoebe Campbell Atkinson. All of the Children, except Rhoda were born in Sackville, New Brunswick.

(1) Sarah Ann Atkinson - b. 1834. Married Marriner Wood Merrill, a friend from Sackville, N.B., who emigrated to Utah with the Atkinson family in 1853. He was the son of Nathan Merrill and Sarah Ann Reynolds. Marriner Wood Merrill later became an apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Moved to Richmond, Cache Valley, Utah in 1860. She d. there in 1915. They were the parents of ten children.

(2) Marriner Atkinson - b. 1835. d. 1838.

(3) Frances Elizabeth Atkinson - b. 1837. Married Ransom Hatch, the son of Ira Sterns Hatch and Welthea Bradford. They were the parents of 14 children, all born in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah. She d. there in 1928.

(4) Mary Jane Atkinson - b. 1838. Married Edwin Pace, the son of Elisha Pace and Eliza Baldwin. They were the parents of 12 children, all born in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah. She d. there in 1881.

(5) William Newlove Atkinson - b. 1840. Married Selina Knighton, the daughter of George Knighton and Catherine Wrigley. Selina was an English emigrant to Utah in 1861. They were the parents of eight children. Their children were all born in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah. He d. there in 1928.

(6) James Isaac Atkinson - b. 1842. Married Hannah Pauline Brown, the daughter of William Brown and Elizabeth Andrews. They were the parents of nine children, all born in Woods Cross, Davis County, Utah. He d. there in 1933.

(7) Thomas P. Atkinson - b. 1843. Married Ruth Elizabeth Simmons, the daughter of William Burt Simmons and Amanda Chipman. They were the parents of nine children. They originally lived in Bountiful, Utah, but later moved to Nevada, returned to several different locations in Utah and eventually moved to Rexburg, Madison County, Idaho. He d. in Idaho in 1928.

(8) Peter Atkinson - b. 1844. d. 1844.

(9) Mark Atkinson - b. 1844. d. 1844. Peter and Mark were twins.

(10) Amos Stiles Atkinson - b. 1846. Married Alice Prescott, the daughter of James Prescott and Margaret Westhead, who were English converts to Mormonism. They were the parents of six children, all of whom were born at the family home in Parley's Park, Summit County, Utah. Amos Stiles died in Wasatch County, Utah, in 1893.

(11) Priscilla Atkinson - b. 1847. d. 1847.

(12) Aquilla Atkinson - b. 1847. d. 1847. Priscilla and Aquills were twins.

(13) Phoebe Atkinson - b. 1848. Married (1) Henry Hales, the son of Stephen Henry Hales, Sr., and Eveline Lydia Carter. They were the parents of five children, who were born in various locations in Utah where the family was living. After the death of Henry Hales, Phoebe married (2) Arthur Richens and (3) David Sanders. She d. 1938 in Madison County, Idaho.

(14) Profinda Atkinson - b. 1850. d. 1853 just after the family left the Mississippi River for the trek to Utah.

(15) Rhoda Atkinson - b. 1856 in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah. Married George Walter Knight, the son of Arthur David Knight and Sarah Ann Williams. They had no children. She d. in Salt Lake City in 1947.

The Children of William Atkinson and Sarah Ann Tingey. All of the children were born in Woods Cross, Davis County, Utah.

(16) Henry Atkinson - b. 1864. Married Mary Ann Prescott, the daughter of James Prescott and Margaret Westhead (and the sister of the wife of his brother Amos Stiles Atkinson). They were the parents of seven children. They lived initially in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah, but later they moved to Francis, Summit County, Utah. He d. in Francis in 1905.

(17) Olive Atkinson - b. 1865. Married George Henry Muir, the son of William Smith Muir and Lucy Drake. They were the parents of six children. They lived initially in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah, but they moved to Gray, Bonneville County, Idaho about 1895. She d. in Idaho in 1936.

(18) Charles Hazen Atkinson - b. 1867. Married Helen Mar Ellis, the daughter of Stephen Hales Ellis and Helen Marr Lee. They were the parents of three children, all born in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah. He d. in 1901 while serving in the Northwestern States Mission in Billings, Montana.

(19) Mary Ann Atkinson - b. 1869. Married William Robinson Deppe, the son of Carl Ludwig Wilhelm (William) Deppe and Margaret Parkinson. They lived in Bountiful, Davis County, Utah (about 1890-1900) and then moved to Cache County, Utah, where they remained. They are the parents of five children. She d.1955.

(20) John Edward Atkinson - b. 1871. d. 1879.

(21) Charlotte Alzina Atkinson - b. 1873. Married Walter Hatch, the son of Orin Hatch and Maria Thompson. They moved to Oxford, Franklin County, Idaho, where the last nine of their ten children were born. She d. 1928.

(22) Joseph Hyrum Atkinson - b. 1875. Married Mary Jane Hales, the daughter of Stephen Hales and Jane Alice Crosby. They were the parents of three children, all of whom were born in Woods Cross, Davis County, Utah.

(23) Clara Atkinson - b. 1879. Married William Holroyd Argyle, the son of Joseph Argyle and Ellen Taylor Holroyd. They remained in Bountiful, and their seven children were born there.
