"I would like to mention something that had me (and probably other people) confused."

"Many researchers indicate that William Ballard of Lynn, MA. was christened at Sanford Priors, Warwickshire. It seems that there is NO SUCH PLACE! There IS however a place called SALFORD PRIORS in WORCESTERSHIRE (NOT Warwickshire) specifically in Evesham. There are also many records of a William Ballard, Jr. who was born in Evesham about 1580. Since I have NOT been able to locate (online) any other Ballards in Evesham at that time, Iam making an educated guess that Wm. Ballard of Lynn is probably the son of Wm. Ballard, Jr. of Evesham and the Grandson of Wm. Ballard, Sr. of Southwell, Nottinghamshire."

Lynne D. Miller American Research

Hi Gary,
  • I will leave the question of the Williams and the wives to those better placed to comment and restrict myself to "both Williams as the son of Henry Ballard and Elizabeth Townsend" on which I do feel qualified to offer an opinion.
  • Having done 20 years or more research into the early UK Ballard lines I can state unequivocally that William is NOT the son of Henry Ballard and Elizabeth Townsend.
  • Ignoring for the moment that no evidence has yet been found to link William Ballard in America to a William Ballard in England the simple fact is that William, son of Henry Ballard and Elizabeth Townsend, died and was buried in Southwell, Nottinghamshire aged 16.
  • An unfortunate fact for the several hundred people who cite the relationship in their pedigrees!
  • The jury is still out on the early Ballards and their likely English origins.

Best wishes,

Subject: [BALLARD] William Ballard, England ca 1600

  • I seem to have two William Ballards in my ancestry, who may very well be the same person.
  • However, there is much conflicting information, and I'm hoping someone on the Ballard list can help me solve the mystery.
  • I came to William Ballard through my own ancestors (both 9th and 10th gg, through my great grandfather, and my great grandmother's lines) but also that of my mother-in-law, who is much closer to the Ballard line than I am.
    • Adelaide Barlene True is the daughter of Hazel Lenore Ballard (and my mother-in-law).
    • Their line runs Hazel, Leander Hudson Ballard, Albert Ballard, Rufus Ballard, Jonathan Ballard, Jonathan Ballard, John Ballard, and finally, William Ballard and Grace Berwick.
  • I have that William Ballard as born about 1617 in either England, or Andover, MA.
  • There were several generations in MA, after which the 2nd Jonathan moved to Vassalboro, ME, and the line remained in Maine from there forward.
  • In my own line, starting with my great grandparents (Richardson) who lived in Franklin, MA, it goes:
    • William Stephen Richardson (gg), John Warren Richardson, Stephen Wilkes Richardson, John Wilkes Richardson, AbigailHaven, Moses Haven, Mary Ballard, Nathaniel Ballard, William Ballard.
      • This William Ballard, I had born about 1603 in England, married to Elizabeth Lee.
  • Through my ggrandmother, Sarah Metcalf Allen Richardson, it goes Martha Miller Metcalf, Abijah Whiting Metcalf, Whiting Metcalf, James Metcalf, Abiel Haven, Daniel Haven, Mary Ballard, Nathaniel Ballard and William Ballard, again with Elizabeth Lee.
  • From other family trees posted on line, I see that some have William Ballard married to both Grace and Elizabeth, and sometimes a Mary with surname unknown.
  • The 1603 and 1617 dates appear for him in numerous postings.
  • I also seem to have both Williams as the son of Henry Ballard and Elizabeth Townsend,
    • although at least one person has him possibly the son of Henry's brother.
  • It's already rather interesting to see that I may share the Ballard ancestry with my wife...
  • I'm reasonably certain that Henry Ballard and Elizabeth Townsend did not have two sons named William, but what I would like to know is this:
    • Are the "two" Williams really one and the same person?
    • With 2 or 3 wives?
    • Or, are there two Williams, and Henry is the father of only one?

Thanks for any insight you may provide. Gary Allen Richardson
