A Patriot of the American Revolution for VIRGINIA. DAR Ancestor # A007525
One of VA's wealthiest individuals, pre-revolution. Captain in revolution member of VA Legislature. Lost everything in revolution. Family tradition has it that he was a captain in the American revolution, but proof has not been found. It was also said that he was a man of wealth and a member of the Virginia Legislature. again proof has not been found. From a SAR application it is stated William Bates assisted in establishing American independence while acting in the capacity of Public servant, supplied corn to the Continental army.
