Berry is not listed in my Welsh sources as being Welsh. However, the Welsh did borrow English names when they adopted the practice of using fixed surnames. However, if found in Wales it is not common. In the Middle Ages the name appeared as de la Beri, Biry, Bury, del Bury, ate Bery. In part the origin maybe from byrig the Old English dative for fort as seen in Berry Pomeroy in Devon, Bury St. Edmu nds in Suffolk and Bury in Huntingdonshire and Lancashire. In Middle English the word beri, biri and buri were used for manor house and the name might come from a servant at the manor house. On occasion it might also represent a dweller by the fort (Old English burg) or by the bower (Old English bür). This name is found in Ireland but is of English origin. The name is also found in Scotland and Berry of Tayfield i s an old landed family in Fife. In Aberdeen and Argyll i t is said to be a variant of Barrie. an Gael

Kentucky Kinfolks The Louisville Herald-Post, 1930s Berry There are separate deeds of land in King George County from Joseph Berry, Jr., to Benjamin Berry, to Charles Carter , under the date of 1758. These tracts adjoin that of each other and land of Enoch Berry. They lie on the north side of the Rappahannock River. These deeds show that this land was inherited from their father, Joseph Berry, Sr., by will, 1749, who inherited it from his father, William Berry , and wife, Margaret Doughty; who inherited it from Margaret's father Enoch Doughty, who inherited it from his father , Rev. Francis Doughty.

In 1758, a Joseph Berry and a Benjamin Berry arrived in th e Shenandoah and established Berry's Ferry. This later became Berryville. They are believed to be the same Joseph and Benjamin Berry. Capt. Thomas Berry's descendants (he lived in the Shenandoah) state that he was their youngest brother, and that their family seat had been "Berry Plain," King George County, Virginia. There is no definite record of the last names of the wives of Capt. Joseph Berry, Sr.; Joseph Berry, Jr.; or Benjamin Berry.

Thomas Berry (not Capt. Thomas Berry), of "Berry Plain," King George County, Virginia, married Elizabeth Washington, November 19, 1758, and resided at "Berry Plain," King George County, Virginia; and whose will is recorded in King George County, naming sons: Washington, John, and Lawrence Berry; and a grandson, John Thornton Augustine Washington. Lawrence Berry was a clerk of King George County for many years, and through him the family estate of "Berry Plain" remained in the family for several generations later.

The will of Enoch Berry is recorded in King George County, 1763, in which he names son and heir, Thomas Berry, to inherit his home place. It also mentions his deceased daughter, Winifred Berry, and his son-in-law, Benjamin Berry. It is not believed that this is the same Enoch Berry who married Druscilla Bunberry in September 1726. The first Enoch Berry is believed to be a brother of Capt. Joseph Berry, Sr., and that these two brothers owned land adjoining each other, inherited from their father, William Berry (will recorded in King George County, 1721), and wife, Margaret Doughty, daughter of Enoch Doughty. http://www.kentuckyexplorer.com/nonmembers/00-06068.html ______________________________

In answer to your second email to me, I sent you this email that I will include, below.... you never acknowledged receiving it so I'll post it here, in case it didn't reach you . I would again ask that you send me your documentation for Enoch Berry's birth date that you list as "1708 in KGC. " I like to list all documentation for whatever dates I enter into my gen. program, so would appreciate your sharing your documentation for this date....

"To save confusion, start to count backwards from yourself (you're not included in your tree of ancestors), so the 1st generation is your parents, then grandparents then 1st reats, etc... genealogically speaking, the 11th gen. for you would be 3 beyond Henry Berry. I don't know who Dulcebells parents were. As she and Enoch were married at St. Paul's, I checked the parish records (I have a copy 1715-1789) to see if I could find her birth, but it isn't recorded there. There are lots of Bunburys, but later...the only possible father for her, in the parish records, would be a William, who died 11-16-1725 (no age given, so there is no assurance he is an adult...it's just a clue for you to research). The VA archives have a great deal of info ....have you browsed there?- they are on line... http://image.vtls.com/collections/cc_archive.html I have no documentation for Enoch Berrys birth, but as you seem to have it (1708), how about sharing with me.......I 'll add it to my site.. My use of the date of "16??" came from a long article written by a very well respected Va researcher George Harrison Sanford King, of Fredericksburg, Va. It appeared in the Virginia Genealogist, in 1956. (He was so well known and his work so respected, that an affidavit from him saying he has seen so and so bible records, etc was good enough for the DAR to accept it as fact!) He was a fabulous researcher, and a collateral member of our family, so I must admit I accept his word as law! He lists, as his footnote for Enoch, Cavaliers and Pioneers by Nell Marion Nugent, Richmond, 1934 pg 481 .....I have never looked to see what it contained. I follow my direct line, by an large, so ancillary line aren't as important to me. I don't live in VA, but in Charleston, WV....my own line moved from the Fredericksburg area in about 1840, so we've been in WV since that time. My husband is in state government, so we go to DC 5 or 6 times a year, and I try, at least once, to get to the Eastern Shore and the Northern Neck at least on one of those trips . Researching in DC is also one of my favorite pastimes...the LOC and the Natl. DAR are both fabulous libraries......visit if you ever get a chance. Cheers. (I sent you a photo of Berry Plains.....) Henry Berry and Enoch Doughty (notice the spelling; there is no ER in the name, as you have inserted) are my 8th great grandparents. Be careful of what you find at the LDS in their Ancestral and IGI files....they are both filled with provable errors and the info (other than what is on film, etc)Ancestral are simply submitted data, and not checked for correctness and the same goes for a portion of the IGI and so all must be treated as clues and not fact. I'm sure you've seen that The ancestral files list parents for Henry Berry and state him to have been born somewhere in New England, when in fact we have documentation that he arrived in 1653, if memory serves, as a headright for E. Lawson... If you get a chance, be sure to visit the areas in Virginia where they lived...the Eastern Shore is very rural and it still possible to get a feel for how it must have been like. The same goes for the Northern Neck area, where the Berrys lived. Berry Plain, built in 1721 by the Berry family is still there and quite lovely, as is ST. Paul's Parish Church, where many of them worshiped. I highly recommend a trip to the area...very lovely. Thanks for writing. I'm sure it's apparent how much work I put in on both families and I appreciate your letting me know that it was a help. If I can be of any further assistance, let me know. I have a good many early VA resources. sandra ferguson fegr@ntelos.net _____________________________________ There was a Rev. Francis Doughty in Northampton Co VA at Hungars Parish in early VA, Eastern Shore. Doughtys abound i n both Northampton Co and Accomack Co on Eastern Shore of VA.

I am standing here at my 20 ft high brick wall named Charles Berry b 1811-10 married 1/31/1931 Accomack Co VA to Margaret Lewis b 1811-12 dau of William and Anna "Ann" Lewis. Charles Berry has had the initial C for some, no initial, the initial P for others, one set says bible records indicate son of John and Nancy Berry from Delaware. 1880 US Census for Accomack Co VA says farmer b. VA, parents b.VA, name s of sons were William P, John N. and George Washington Berry. Daughters named Mary, Sarah J., Jane, Parmelia. Anything familiar here? Leigh Young Bundick drc66@earthlink.net ______________________________ The Rev. Francis Doughty was the minister at Hungar's parish, and his second wife was from the area - Anne Graves, who had also been married to the first 2 ministers of the parish - Nathaniel Eaton and William Cotton. Francis's youngest son, Enoch, was the only one of his children born in the new world, and emigrated with his father when he went t o Va ...Enoch married in Va, but to who is unknown, and his only documented child was Margaret, who married William Berry in Richmond Co, 1686. Wm Berry was the son of the original Berry emigrant, Henry, who arrived in VA as a headright, in 1650. For more on the family visit my webpage and read the bio of Francis and his family.... http://www.anagelfi re.com/wv2/vabullard/ and also what I know of the Berrys. I'm afraid I've not found a Charles. Our Berrys were not from the Accomack area, but King George and Stafford Co. There is no documentation on other VA grandchildren for Francis, as Margaret is his only provable VA descendant, so we have no way of knowing if Enoch actually did have other children, or if those Doughtys in Accomack are descendants of another line not related to Francis..... sorry I couldn't be of any help. Francis Berry 1721-1791 James Davis 1731-1808 Capt. Joseph Berry 1691-1749 Catherine SimCoxe d. after 1749 William Berry d. 1720 Margaret Doughty Henry Berry d. 1677 Ann (Saunders ?)

Capt. Joseph and Catherine Simcock Berry were the parents of the following children

Frances Berry, born on November 11, 1721, in St. Paul's Parish, King George County, Virginia. She married 3 times, the last to James Davis, and these 2 were my ancestors. Joseph, born on April 27, 1723, and appears in court record s of the county on December 23, 1758, when he and his wife Mary conveyed 150 acres of land to Colonel Charles Carter of "Cleve"...the deed states that it is land left Joseph in his father, Capt. Joseph's will of 1759. It appears that Joseph was moving from King George County to join his relations who were by this time moving to northern Virginia. Benjamin Berry was born on Oct. 16, 1758, and his birth is recorded in the parish records. Benjamin married Elizabeth Thornley, the daughter of John Thornley and wife Ann Woffendale, and had the following children; Benjamin, who married Jane Bell, John Berry who married Elizabeth, Reuben Berry, who married Dinah, William Berry, Thomas Berry, Dullabella, who married James Benson and Sarah Berry who married John Humphreys. Benjamin was a lieutenant in the Frederick co militia, in 1758 through at least 1761. He also shopped at the same store in Winchester, as did his brother, and his purchases are recorded for the christmas season of 1761.His name appears in many land deals of the area, in personal property tax lists, and in 1792, Benjamin was sworn in as Deputy Sheriff .Benjamin laid out the town of Berryville, in Frederick (now Clarke) county, Virginia with a land purchase on 1798, and laid out a town covering 20 acres, lying on both sides of the great road leading from Snicker Gap to Winchester, and originally surveyed by George Washington. His town was established by an Act of the General Assembly of Virginia, on January 1, 1798, and there is still one building in Berryville that was built by Benjamin. Margaret was born on June 14, 1726, and was the second little girl of that name born to Joseph and Catherine. Joseph's mother's name had been Margaret and it seems that he wanted a child named for her, and when the first child died, he named the next girl Margaret, too. Thomas appears to have been born in Hanover Parish, King George county, after his parents moved from Saint Paul's Parish. He was apprenticed for 5 years to John Gregg, carpenter and house joiner. He married Frances Ann Kendall 1737-1818, daughter of Samuel Jr and Elizabeth Woffendall Kendall. Thomas and wife Frances had the following children: Margaret, who married Colonel Robert Rankin, Elizabeth, who married Lt. William Calmes, Winifred, Joseph, who married Peggy Kercheval, Jane, married John Kercheval, Sally who married William Kennan, William, Thomas, Samuel, who married Sarah Kendall, and Catherine, who married Joseph Cole Thomas and Francis moved to Frederick county, Va, and shopped n a store in Winchester, where portions of his accounts are still in existence, an interesting look into everyday life in the 1700s. Thomas was a company commander during the Revolutionary War, with his company formed in Winchester as part of the 8th Regt of the Virginia Continental Line. The company was present in Philadelphia of 1777, fought at the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and were present at Valley Forge, for the winter stay of '78. After the war Capt Berry again resumed his life in Frederick co, Va, where he died in 1818, and his will was administered in Frederick co, Va and in Mason County, Ky Withers Baldwin Reuben, one of the younger sons of Capt. Joseph and Catherine, his wife, and was apprenticed on January 1, 1755, to John Gregg, who then lived in Stafford County, Va. He married Margaret Martin, daughter of Francis Martin, who, in his will of King George county 1770, left her 1/4 of his estate. Joseph Berry was the eldest son and heir of his parents , William and Margaret Doughty Berry. He is described i n contemporary literature as a "planter of Stafford County," and entries in the St. Paul's Parish Register show that he lived in that parish and later moved to King George County, where he also owned property. His birth date is derived from a statement he made in 1748 at the Fairfax court, in which he said he was then 57 years of age....it also contains the information that Joseph Berry lived "near King George Court House about 70 miles distant."

Joseph was the son of William Berry and his wife Margaret Doughty, who lived in Hanover Parish, Richmond County, soon to be King George County, and his will was the first will present in Will Book 1 for that county. William was a large landowner in Essex and King George Counties and his name is frequently found in the county records of both. William Married Margaret Doughty, of old Rappahannock County, daughter of Enoch Doughty, and this Doughty family will be discussed on their own page.

William and Margaret settled on the north side of the Rappahannock River in what was then Richmond County, and was a large landowner, owning over 4000 acres in the area. They had 4 children;

Joseph, who we have already discussed Enoch, younger of the 2 sons of William and Margaret, was named for his maternal grandfather, Enoch Doughty. He married on December 12, 1726, Ducabella Bunbury, and the marriage is on the St. Paul's Parish records. Enoch inherited from his father the plantation in Hanover Parish, King George county, and he lived there till his death in October of 1763. Margaret, eldest of the 2 daughters of William and Margaret, married Christopher Rogers who died testate in King George County in 1795. Elizabeth married Robert Strother of King George County, who died, testate, in 1735 . She married a second time, a William Wheeler of Westmoreland county, who died, testate, in 1762. William died in 1720, leaving a will.

William Berry as the son of our original Va Berry emigrant, Henry Berry, who arrived as a headright in a land patent issued to Epharaditus Lawson, dated May 22, 1650. Thus, Henry arrived, probably from England, and after paying Lawson the land allotted him from the Colony of Virginia to pay for his passage, started out his life a free man. By 1656 he received a land patent for 140 acres, and from then on appears often in the records of old Rappahannock County . He lived on the south side of the Rappahannock River, in the county of what is now Essex, upon the Occupacia Creek. His wife's name was Ann, perhaps Saunders, but that is unsure, These 2 had the following children; ___________________________ ID: I28022 Name: William BERRY Sex: M Birth: 1750 in King George County, Virginia Death: 1819 in Spencer County, Indiana ____________________________ ID: I4656 Name: William BERRY Given Name: William Surname: BERRY Sex: M Birth: 1756 in Berry Plain, King George County, Virginia, U SA Death: Dec 1819 in , Granville County, North Carolina, USA Change Date: 10 Oct 2003 at 14:13
