About William 'Billy' Huff, I

Many sources say that William was known as "Billy" or "Old Billy Huff".

On William and Sarah's marriage certificate, he gives his birth year as 1783 and the location as North Carolina. He also gives Sarah's birth year as 1783 and the location as Maryland.

Kentucky marriage records show that a William Huff married Sarah Joseph on the 20th of November, 1808. This matches Maryland birth records, which show that Sarah Joseph was born to William Joseph in 1783. It is unclear how William Huff and Sarah Joseph both ended up in Kentucky and what prompted them to move to Virginia. If this is the right couple, it is interesting that the family had connections to Kentucky very early on. William and Sarah were married by George Brittain, Justice of the Peace.

1830 and 1840 census records show William and Sarah living in Lee County, Virginia. In 1830, there were eight free white persons in their family, and in 1840 there were 5 free white persons.

In the 1850s, a new county called Wise County was formed. It included parts of Lee County. From this time forward, the Huffs always put their residence as Wise County.

At the time of the 1860 census, William and Sarah were living in Big Stone Gap in Wise County, Virginia. Sarah gave her age as 77, her birth year as around 1783, and the location of her birth as Maryland. William Huff gave his birth year as 1783 and the location as North Carolina.

By the 1870 census, William and Sarah had moved to Gladeville in Wise County, Virginia, probably to move in with family members. The household members include: William (88), Sarah (87), Mary (53), John (24), Rachael (23), Julia Ann (15), Manda (3) and Eliza (3). All family members have the last name Huff. John Huff, who is listed as the head of the house, gives his occupation as "farmer". William also gives his occupation as "farmer". Sarah, Mary, and Rachael give their occupations as "keeping house", while Julia Ann gives her occupation as "at home".

William Huff, born in North Carolina in 1783, and his wife, Sarah Joseph, born in Maryland in 1783, were very early settlers on Clear Creek - prior to 1815. This Huff family through intermarriage were closely associated with the Hamiltons, Dotsons, and other early settlers at Ramsey. Also this Billy Huff was the great-grandfather of the late Mr. Patton Beverly of Norton.

In 1941, the writer had an interview with Mr. Beverly and was told the following story:

"Old Billy Huff lived on Clear Creek. He was my great-grandfather. One day he told his folks he had found a fine chestnut tree - just loaded. He took his axe to cut it down. He was very old, but active as he could be. He was gone so long his family became uneasy about him and went to search for him. He had the big tree about half down. There stuck his axe in the notch he had just cut and he had just pitched back from it - dead.

"Where he had cut a sprout down to get it out of the way, his breeches leg had caught on it, and as he fell it tore a hole in the leg of his trousers. That was on the top of Wagon Track Ridge, between the two prongs of Clear Creek. I was just eleven years old then, (Patton Beverly was born 1860, so old Billy Huff died in 1871) but I remember I helped carry him up the hill above where Laurel Grove Cemetery now is. His wife was a Joseph - Sally Joseph. She outlived Billy and went to Kentucky with her sons, James and Billy, Jr., and died there."

William and Sarah Joseph Huff had sons, Charles (1812-1862) who married Mary (Polly) Dotson, a daughter of Simon Dotson, James and William Huff, Jr. The latter married Phoebe, the oldest child of Schuyler and Susanna Dotson Hamilton. After the marriage of William and Phoebe they settled at West Norton which was then called Little Stone Gap. Their home stood at or near where the Dorchester Depot once stood.

Billy Huff, Jr., was a Primitive Baptist preacher and while living here at Little Stone Gap, a church was organized in his home on the 2nd Saturday in April, 1852, the first church ever organized in the present Norton corporate limits. The L & N Railroad took the site of the church building when it moved into Norton, after which the church built a house near the Coca Cola Bottling plant and held services there until around 1914, when it was sold and the church was moved to Esserville, where it is still active today, the first church organized in Norton and the oldest active church now in Wise County. Billy Huff, Jr., and his brother, James, moved to Knott County, Kentucky before the Civil war and lived there the remainder of their lives. He later organized several churches in Knott County.

William Huff is mentioned in the book "The Story of Wise County (Virginia)".

William's parents are frequently listed as Samuel Huff and Sarah Hix. However, their son William Nathan Huff married Elizabeth Cameron in 1806. It is clear that William Nathan Huff and William "Billy" Huff are not the same person.

It is not known what, if any relation, William Huff was to Dr. James Huff. William Huff was born in North Carolina in 1783, married Sarah "Sally" Joseph who was born in Maryland in 1783.
