About William H Brokaw

William H. Brokaw was the son of Abraham and Charlotte Ann (Morris) Brokaw. He married twice.

1) Ann Exton in 1867. 2) Isabell G. C. Wilson on 01 Sep 1904.

He enlisted in 1862 in Company H, Twenty-first Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers for 9 mos. It was part of the Sixth Army Corps & he participated at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville & others. WIlliam H. Brokaw mustered out June 1863.

William was enumerated on the 1880 census as a cracker baker, and he worked for his father-in-law Adam Exton.

Trenton Evening Times (NJ), Dec. 30, 1919: W. H. BROKAW, SR., DEAD AT 74 YEARS Pneumonia Fatal to Aged Businessman After Short illness William H. Brokaw, Sr., well known in business circles of the city, died at his home, 445 East State Street, this morning of pneumonia after a short illness. He was 74 years old. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Ivins & Taylor have charge of the funeral. Mr. Brokaw is survived by a son, William H. Brokaw, Jr., a daughter, Mess. William S. Roe, of Shorthills, N. J., a step daughter, Miss Hazel Wilson and five grandchildren.

Mr. Brokaw was the son of the late Abraham and Mrs. Charlotte Ann Brokaw and was born in Somerset County, February 27, 1844. The ancestry of the Brokaw family traces back to Bergnon Broucard, a French Huguenot, who fled from France, to escape religious persecution and found temporary refuge in Germany. He later came to this country. Mr. Brokaw was educated in the Somerset County schools and resided with his parents until 1862, when he enlisted in Company H., 21st Regiment, New Jersey Volunteers.

After serving for nine months, during which time his regiment, a part of the Sixth Army Corps, participated in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and a number of minor engagements. Mr. Brokaw received his discharge and located in this city. He engaged in the grocery business for some time, but later became affiliated with the A. Exton & Company. In 1867, Mr. Brokaw married Miss Ann Exton, daughter of Adam Exton, who had established the cracker company. In 1871 Mr. Brokaw became a member of the A. Exton firm, from which he resigned last September.

Mrs. Brokaw died in 1867 and September 1, 1901, Mr. Brokaw married Mrs. Isabel C. Wilson, widow of Samuel K. Wilson. In addition to being a member of the Exton Company, Mr. Brokaw was connected with a number of enterprises. He was vice president of the First National Bank, president of the Washington Market Association, the Greenwood Cemetery Association and a director of he Standard Fire Insurance Association and the Meadow Mountain Coal Company. For many years he was a member of the board of directors of the Inter-State Fair Association and last November, was unanimously elected president to succeed the late Jonathan Blackwell. At that time he was the oldest member of the board.

Mr. Brokaw as a member of Trenton Lodge, No. 5, F. and A. M.: Three-Times-Three Chapter, No. 5, R. A. M.” Palestine Commandery, No. 4, Knights Templar and of the Mystic Shrine, Ancient Order of Scottish Rites. He was also a member of the Lotus and the Country Clubs. For many years Mr. Brokaw has been a member of Trinity P. E. Church, of which he has been senior warden for more than 30 years.
