An 1897 letter (from an unnamed Bryan granddaughter to her grandson Jesse T. Wilkinson) describes some of the family relationships:

"Olivia Croom was the wife of William Bryan...

Olivia Croom was the Daughter of Joshua Croom, of Lenoir Co. William Bryan, the father of my father and of Susan Bryant, was born in Craven County, though I think he lived and his children were born in Lenoir or Wayne Counties.

The father of William Bryan was Colonel John Bryan of Craven County.

To make it a little clearer --- Your grandmother, Susan Bryan, was the daughter of William Bryan and Olivia Croom; Your great grandfather William Bryan was the son of Colonel John Bryan; Your great grandmother Olivia was the daughter of Joshua Croom."
