About William Governor Bussard

Posted by Becky Vreeland on Ancestry.com:

"I have a letter from a man in PA who has been researching the Bussard/Buzzardfor 50+ years. Here is what he wrote:

As near as I can determine, all of the Bussard (French sp.) descendants in North America can trace their line back to Governor William and Margaret Bussard of Dauphiny Providence, France. Gov. Bussard was a member of the Centeral Council in Paris, Embassador to Spain and Governor of Dauphiny Providence. However, the King of France determined that Gov. Bussard along with three other Governors of the Southern Providences were Protestant believers and as such, they and their families were to be put to death. Gov. Bussard was given an early warning by a friend in the Centeral Council which allowed him to escape with his wife and 1.5 year old son.French historians tell us that the King wanted the Governor's nearly 3,200 merchant ships to add to his navy to use in the impending war with Spain. The young Governor and his wife took their only child by night to Bern, Switzerland where they lived for five years and then they went to Mannheim, Germany where they lived out their lives worshiping in the Reformed Church of Mannheim.Upon their death, they left several sons and daughters who continued to live in Mannheim, Germany and the surrounding community. One son came to North America, his name was Jacques Bussard/Bossart, he married a young lady after arriving in North America, she was also of French Background. They Had two daughters. Five grandsons of Gov. William and Margaret Bussard followed their Uncle Jacques to North America, their names were: Andreas Bossart Jacob Bossart Michael Bossart Philip Bossart Peter Bossart

Andreas, Michael and Philip remained in Pennsylvania as near as I can determine to this date [letter was written in 1986].Jacob and Peter after a brief stay in PA, moved to Frederick County, Maryland. Bussard - the French spelling Bossart - the German spelling Buzzard - the English spelling

It is interesting to note that Jacob's Family kept the French spelling and Peter's family was divided, some kept the French spelling and some adopted the English spelling. Andreas' and Michael's families kept the German spelling for the most part, while Philip's family seemed to be divided between the German and the English spelling."
