Biographical Summary
"William, Master of Carmichael, Knight, the eldest son, who in his youth went over to France, where he learned the art of war, and was one of the gens d'armes of Louis XIII. He was knighted by Charles I. during his stay in Scotland, being one of the six knights nominated by the Marquess of Douglas on his elevation to that dignity on 17 June 1633. He had a Great Seal charter of the lands of Hyndford on 7 April 1643, where he was styled as Master of Carmichael.
He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Clydesdale Regiment and fought in the Battle of Marston Moor on 2 July 1644. He also fought in the Battle of Philliphaugh on 13 September 1645...
...and died vita patris in August 1657. He married Grizel, a daughter of William, first Marquess of Douglas (contract dated 23 March 1635), by whom he had issue."
