About William Henry Cone/Coon, Jr.

Mr. Coon was widely known and highly respected and was very popular with the children who called him "Daddy". For the past few years he has been making his home at the Soldiers' Home in Danville and was here on a visit when death claimed him. Funeral services were conducted in the Beckhart home on Wednesday afternoon; interment was in the Monticello cemetery.

Mr. Coon was born near London, Ohio on February 8, 1833 and came to Illinois when a boy. He was united in marriage with Miss Isabel Thomas in Monticello on May 22, 1856. Mrs. Coon died in April 1916. He is survived by the following children: J. M. Coon and Mrs. Lucretia Woolington, Decatur; Mrs. Sarah Beckhart, Latham; Mrs. A. E. Adams, Glenwood Springs, CO; Mrs. Rose Shephard, Santa Monica CA; and E. A. Coon and Mrs. Ada Beckhart, Monticello.

Mr. Coon served in the Civil War as Corporal in Company A, 107th IL Volunteer Infantry. His company was organized at Wapella in August 1862 and was mustered into the service at Camp Butler, near Springfield, on September 4th of that year. He was mustered out of the service at Salisbury NC, on June 21, 1865 and honorable discharged on July 2, 1865.
