About William Cook

Cook was an enterprising man and was one of a group trying to colonize Stewart Island, sailing there on the Prince of Denmark in 1826 with Tiraha and their one-year-old son George. The venture was abandoned after the ship having sailed into Port Jackson loaded with flax and 460 sealskins could not realize enough profit and was sold by the Vice Admiralty Court in 1827 to pay off creditors. Cook and his family returned to the Bay of Islands around 1834. His name appears in the 1846 census listed as a carpenter with a wife and nine children.

He gave evidence to the Kororareka Court in 1858 in connection with a land claim by Wepiha in the Waikare Inlet. Tiraha also gave evidence saying that the land had been paid for to Kapotai with one double-barrelled gun, five pounds, one pair of blankets, one piece of calico, one print and three pounds to a blacksmith for mending the gun. The Court ruled in favour of Cook in 1862 granting him 27 acres in Waikare.

Was said to have fought Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo before boarding an English whaling ship as third mate and landed in The Bay of Islands.

Possible identification for the Battle of Waterloo.
