About William Dack

William Dack (1760 – November 30, 1849; born William Dagg) was a Irish Canadian farmer, tavern owner and local politician.

William was born in Agherlowe, Ireland to Rebecca and Mathew Dagg.

He married his first wife, Jane Code, on 1791 in Wicklow, Ireland. William and Jane immigrated to Canada aboard the ship the Mary Ann Bell, arriving in Montreal, Canada, July of 1817. They settled near Smith Falls, Ontario in the Ottawa Valley, where he later opened a tavern in the 1830s, which still stands today.

After Jane's death in 1835, William married Anne Rielly, also born in Ireland. They had three children, one of whom died in infancy.

The Dack spelling does not appear until William arrives Canada, possibly the result of a spelling error on the part of an immigration officer.
