Died when a taxi cab hit him.
By NICHOLE M. CHRISTIAN - NY Times Published: September 6, 2000 A grandson of President Harry S. Truman died on Monday from injuries he suffered when a cab hit him on Park Avenue in the East 70's over the weekend, his family said. The accident is still under investigation.
The victim, William Wallace Daniel, 41, was the son of the novelist Margaret Truman, the only child of President Truman, and Clifton Daniel, the former managing editor of The New York Times, who died in February. The second of four brothers, Mr. Daniel was a psychiatric social worker at the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University.
The police would not discuss the investigation, but his family provided a copy of the police report, which said Mr. Daniel was trying to cross Park Avenue at East 76th Street at 2:40 a.m. Saturday when the yellow cab struck him.

HARRY S. TRUMAN'S GRANDSON, HIT BY CAB IN NEW YORK CITY, DIES
A grandson of President Harry S. Truman has died from head injuries sustained when he was knocked down by a taxi outside his mother's Manhattan home.
William Wallace Daniel, 41, was the son of Truman's only child, novelist Margaret Truman, and former 'New York Times' managing editor Clifton Daniel, who died in February. He was hit by a yellow cab on Park Avenue on Saturday and died on Monday at New York Hospital.
Daniel, the second of four brothers, was a psychiatric social worker at Columbia University. He was crossing Park Avenue at East 76th Street, a few feet from his mother's apartment building, when he was struck at 2:40 a.m. Saturday according to a police report.
The cab was traveling north on Park Avenue when Daniel, walking south, stepped into the street, accoridng to the police report.
The driver, Mohamed Dawoud, 29, told police Daniel was crossing against a traffic light.
At the New York State Psychiatric Institute at Columbia University, Daniel was the head researcher for a study aimed at reducing risky sexual activity among mentally ill men at risk of HIV infection.
In addition to his mother, Daniel is survived by his brothers, Clifton Truman Daniel, Harrison Gates Daniel, and Thomas Washington Daniel."
