About William "Drate" Mathews

At the age of 19 William Drayton (Drate) joined the Texas Rangers (1858) in the company of Captain John S. Ford. He was in the fight on the Brazos when Iron Jacket, the crafty Comanche was killed. In this fight an unclaimed young black stallion was captured. He rode this horse home to Hays County on April 15, 1861. At that time a company of Hays County men were being sworn in for the Confederate Army. He joined the Confederate Army that same day. Drate's training with the Rangers helped in many ways. He was honorably discharged from the Confederate Army in 1865.

In 1877 W. D. Mathews purchased 300 acres of land west of Trickham. They lived in a log home near a creek. After Betty his first wife and Willie his oldest son died of a "fever", lumber was hauled from Austin to construct a house at another location and the log house was burned. The family lived in that house until 1916 and another house was built on the farm. In 1941 Grady and Eugenia moved to the place. When her grandmother Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) died in 1946 and the estate was settled in 1947, they bought it. In 1977, the Texas Department of Agriculture Family Land Heritage Certificate was awarded to "Home Base," the name given to the property owned by Mr. and Mrs. Grady McIver and originally purchased by the late W. D. Mathews in October, 1877.
