William Embry has been referred to as the Grandsire of Butler County and may be the ancestor to all Embrys in Butler and surrounding counties.

He was born in 1757 in Wake County, North Carolina Colony to William II and Sarah Rachael (Davies) Embry.

William married Nancy Duncan, probably a Cherokee, December 22, 1785, in Indian Territory of North Carolina. Before their marriage they had four sons: John Wesley, Cader, Burrell Davis, and William IV; and two daughters: Polly and Martha D. 'Patsy'. A fifth son, Isaac J. was born after the nuptuals.

William moved from North Carolina in the 1790's to Madison County, Kentucky, which became Garrard County in 1797. On October 6, 1809 he married his second wife, Elizabeth Ann Coy in Garrard County. They had two daughters: Rachael and Lousanna.

Between 1825 and 1833 William and three of his sons' families moved to Butler County. He became known as 'Grancer' when his grandchildren attempted to refer to him as their Grandsire. The community of Grancer along Welch Creek in Butler County is named for him.

William died in 1840 in Butler County at the age of 83.
