William Edward Field was born on July 11, 1849, in Barbour County, Alabama, United States. His parents were Henry Hill Field and Mary Russell Field (Colvin). He was a Merchant.
William married Susan Victorine Field on June 17, 1879, in Farmington, Sankt Francois County, MO, United States. Together they had the following children:
- Annie Russell Field;
- Sallie Bowen Ritchie (Field);
- Margery Virginia Field;
- Willie Lynn Field;
- Edward Clardy Field;
- Susan Victorine Armentrout (Field).

After his father's death, his mother and managers ran the business and plantation until Henry's children grew up and returned from college with College Degrees. They did work part-time to assist their mother while they were in school.
Their father, Henry Hill Field left quite a bit of land in Caldwell County for his children and widow. William was the oldest son, he managed it very well for his mother, changing the profitable mercantile business name to "W E Field and Company." from Henry Hill Field and Son's. Over the years the family sold much of the land owned by his father and mother was sold to the city of Lockhart and Caldwell County. Many generations of the Field family lived in the home until it was sold by William Edward Field's great-grandchildren. The home still stands in Lockhart, Texas in its original beauty.
