WILLIAM S. FOSTER

The Baldwin Ledger, 1 May 1914

Mr. William Foster was born March 27, 1833, in Putman [Putnam?] County, Indiana. He lived on the home farm until he was twenty-three years of age, when he came to Kansas. His journey from Jefferson City, Mo., to Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, he made on foot. He located at Leavenworth where he engaged in the carpenter trade. On April 14, 1858, he married Miss Mary B. Stagg. Early in the year 1859, the young people settled on a claim near Oskaloosa, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Foster were both converted in 1860, and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

In 1861, in response to President Lincoln's call for volunteers, Mr. Foster joined the Company of Home Guards, of Oskaloosa, under Captain McClellen.

At the close of the Civil War he purchased a farm near Baldwin City, where he resided for several years. In 1867, he moved to Baldwin City for his permanent residence. He united with the Methodist Church. He was elected as a trustee and was appointed as a member of the building committee, under whose supervision the first church building was erected in 1868. Considering the limitations of those pioneer days, the scant population and the meager finances, the erection of "the old stone church" was a Herculean undertaking. The faith of Mr. Foster and other pioneers became the firm foundation upon which has been built the ever increasing power of Methodism in Baldwin City. Mr. Foster was also a devoted friend to Baker University in the early days and rendered valuable assistance in the erection of Science Hall.

Mr. and Mrs. Foster being childless, adopted four children — Gertrude Foster, who died in childhood, in 1868; Miss Addie Foster [Sarah Adeline Chandler], and Mr. Burt Foster, of Baldwin City. Mrs. Mary E. Foster [Mary Elizabeth Chandler], wife of the Rev. H. B. Foster, pastor Arlington Church, Kansas City, Mo.

After a protracted illness, Mr. Foster passed to his eternal rest, Sunday, April 26, 1914.

The Service was conducted by Dr. R. B. Kester. The Rev. S. Lampman paid a tribute as a friend of many years. Dr. S. S. Murphy preached an appropriate sermon. Interment in the West Baldwin Cemetery. – R.B.K.
