W G Anderson was a prominent merchant (Anderson and Murison were shipping agents and general dealers in the Heerengracht, Cape Town). He had been born in Sligo, Ireland in 1804. He lived first in Grave (now Parliament) Street and he is recorded at St. George’s Cathedral as renting seats there from 1846 to 1863. By the latter date he had moved to large grounds with a house he called Erinville in Rondebosch which straddled, what is today Rustenburg Girls High School and Marist Brothers College bordering the Liesbeek River. He was Church Warden at St Paul’s in Rondebosch between 1858 and 1879. He presented the church with its beautiful font in 1892, while the children donated the wonderful teak carved pulpit in his memory when he died on 16th August 1893. A stained glass window was dedicated to the memory of Maria Anderson by W G Anderson when she died in 1862.
