OBITUARY. MR WILLIAM HARRISON. Another of tho early bottlers passed! away in the person of Mr William Harrison, whose death occurred at Kinver Downs, Scargill, on the 18th inst. The late Mr Harrison came out to New Zealand in the ship Mersey in 1862, and, almost at once, went to Little River, where he was engaged m cutting lumber and rafting it across Lake Ellesmere to the settlements then opening up. On the opening of White's bridge over the Waimakariri river, he was appointed toll-collector, and acted as such till 1871, when he took up a farm on the Moeraki Downs, Fernside, where he farmed successfully for some 33 years. He took an active part in public affairs, beings at different periods, on School Committees, the Rangiora High School Board, the Farmers' Union, and tho Licensing Committee, and he was also Master of the Good Templar Lodge Good Intent. Some 17 years ago Mr Harrison removed to Scargill, where he took up a portion of the Glenmark Estate, which he farmed until recently. In the year 1904, after 50 years' absence, Mr and Mrs Harrison paid a visit to England, where they stayed for some months. The deceased leaves a grownup family of six sons (tho youngest made the supreme sacrifice at Gallipoli) and two daughters.
