About William Hibbard FitzPatrick
Obituary:
Charleston Courier, Friday, August 16, 1935
Funeral services in memory of William H. Fitzpatrick, long time Charleston resident, city street superintendent and widely known, were conducted at 2 o'clock on Thursday afternoon in the First Methodist church by the pastor, the Reverend Gay C. White.
The esteem in which the well-known citizen was held by the community was borne out in the attendance which taxed the church to capacity. Floral offerings were many and beautiful and one sent by the horsemen in Springfield, Ill., in respect to Harry Fitzpatrick, son of Mr. Fitzpatrick, was gorgeous.
Casket bearers, close friends of Mr. Fitzpatrick, were: A.C. Alexander, Frank Popham, Guy Tefft, Cliff G. McNutt, John S. White and Harry Popham. Burial was in Mound cemetery.
William Hibbard Fitzpatrick was born in Ashmore township, Coles County, Illinois on October 9, 1867. He passed away at the Olney sanitarium on August 13, 1935. Mr. Fitzpatrick was a son of Jeff and Frances (Merritt) Fitzpatrick, a member of a family of five children. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death, the father dying when Mr. Fitzpatrick was but 5 years of age.
He was united in marriage to Lillie J. Walker, on December 8, 1887, and to this union were born 9 children, four of whom have preceded him in death. Three of the children died in infancy and a son, Chester, died in 1918 at the age of 25. The following children survive: Harry C., Hazel and Helen, twins, Hugh H. and Frank. Lucien, Frank's twin, died in infancy.
He also leaves one brother, DeWitt Fitzpatrick of Mattoon, Ill., one sister, Mrs. Pearl Moore of Milford, Ill. and two half-brothers, Len and Orla Harshbarger of Atwood, Ill.
There are 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren surviving. [...portions omitted...] Mr. Fitzpatrick's entire life was spent in Coles county. From 1915 until 1921 he lived in Mattoon where he operated a furniture store. 5 years were spent on a farm near Ashmore. His remaining years were spent in Charleston.
Included in those from out of town who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Len Harshbarger of Atwood, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Cora Fitzpatrick of Kansas, ILl., Mrs. Vivian Haag, Robert Haag, Mrs. John Sheeks, Mrs. Martha Walker, Mrs. Blanche (Chris) Meyer, and DeWitt Fitzpatrick of Mattoon.
