About William Dudley Hughes

Funeral services for W. D. Hughes, 74 years old of Wainwright, who died at 2:30 September 5, at the Oklahoma Baptist Hospital was held September 6, from the Williams-Guipel chapel. The Rev. C.M. Hawkins friend of Hughes for a number of years, officiated and burial was in Greenhill cemetery. Mr. Hughes sustained a broken leg last Monday as he stepped from a truck, causing him to lapse into a coma from which he never rallied. He was born June 11, 1850 and moved to Oklamona in the spring of 1919 locating in Wainwright. He is survived by his widow and four sons. J.W.L. Hughes Wainwright; B.G. Hughes 815 Gibson Street Marvin Hughes Okmulgee and Sidney who was married 10 days ago and is now residing in San Bernardino, CA. Four daughters Mrs. G.H. Smith; Tulsa, OK; Mrs J.H. Carter Tulsa; Mrs. Frank Roe, Wainwright and Mrs. G. V. Boss, Okmulgee, also survive. He is survived by four brothers; T. B. Hughes, Kansas City; Robert L. Hughes, Clinton, MO both of whom attended the funeral services, and John Hughes Adrain, MO and James Hughes, Versailles,MO and two sisters Mrs. Lillie Smiley, Warrensburg, MO and Mrs. Tom Morris Glensted, MO. Our Father will be remembered by many of the elder people of Morgan County round about Versailles and Glensted as has many relatives and friends there and where he spent all of his life up to 5 years ago. He joined the Methodist Church when he was 16 years old and remained to the last strong in the Christian faith and zealous in the work of his Master. We mourn not as those without hope for we know that he has gone Home. As he often expressed himself in the last few months of his life," I will soon throw off these earthly garments and go clad in robes of white to dwell with my Savior"_ G.H.S. He was the son of Richard William Hughes and Margaret Ann Murray. His father died when he was only 19 years old and his brothers and sisters were raised by his mother and grandparents who were the James Murray family.
