JACKSON.--On July 6, 1943, at the Auckland Hospital, William Maltby, relict of the late Caroline Emma Jackson (late of Vogeltqwn, Wellington), and the father of Alfred, William, and Mrs. W. Rice; aged 87 years Interment at Wellington. The death occurred in Auckland this week of Mr. William Maltby Jackson, at the age of 87. Mr. Jackson was well known throughout New Zealand as a radio commentator, horticulturist, and rifle shot. He was born at Brunsby Hall, Sherwood Forest, Nottingham, and came to New Zealand in 1857 in the ship Ivanhoe. During the voyage out about two hundred immigrants, including his father and brother, died of a mysterious fever. On arrival in Wellington he was enrolled as a scholar in Dicky Holmes's private school, where he met the famous William and Arthur Ballinger, two famous rifle shots. In 1876 Mr. Jackson joined the Wellington City Rifles and was their rifle champion for thirteen years and shooting captain for thirty years. In 1910 he organised the Suburbs Defence Rifle Club, and the club won the "Daily Mail" Empire competition in 1911 under his supervision. (Evening Post, 8 July 1943) |
