About William James Dunbar Moodie

William James Dunbar Moodie, Esq., J.P. entered the Civil Service 1843 and, in 1860, was appointed Stipendiary Resident Magistrate and Administrator of Native Law for co. Alexandra, Natal. In 1865 he received a commission as Major-Commandant of the volunteer corps of the Alexandra Mounted Rifles formed in that co. under his auspices.

He married his first wife Clarissa Meek on Sept 28 1853 in Natal and had 11 children.

He married, secondly, Mary 'Minnie' Heddle, daughter of John George Heddle of Melsetter in August 1894.

1901 England census: WJDM and wife Mary were enumerated amongst the boarders at Somerset House, Chine Road, Bournemouth.

1902: (NAAIRS NAB) - WJD Moodie, late Resident Magistrate Klip River, of Bournemouth, Hants, applies for a small augmentation of the pension awarded to him on his retirement in 1881 from the public service of the Colony.
