About William James
U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
William James was a South Carolina colonist.
He is the son of William James and Anne Wyndham.[1] Note: Date of birth is a rough estimation.
William James and Elizabeth Witherspoon were the parents of Major John James "whose daring exploits adorn the Revolutionary history of South Carolina." [2]
William James died in 1750. His widow was named Elizabeth. He had four sons, John, William, Robert, and Samuel; and four daughters, Jannet, Elizabeth, Esther, and Sarah. He mentions his sons-in-law, David Wilson, Gavin Witherspoon, James McCullough, and Nathaniel McCullough. [3]
William came to Williamsburg in 1732 with his brother John, a ruling elder, and others. (See Wallace's History, p. 19.) He had large herds of cattle in the swamps near Kingstree. He was one of the earliest settlers on Black River and was instrumental in having Williamsburg named in honor os William III, King of England.
