William Keene, Sr. (M) b. March 10, 1642, d. February 8, 1684

William Keene was born on March 10, 1642 at Kent Island, Maryland. He was the son of Thomas Keene, Jr. and Mary Thorley. He married Elizabeth "Eliza" Rogers, in Maryland. He died on February 8, 1684 in Northumberland County, Virginia, at age 43.

The name, William Keene, appears in the following records of Northumberland Co., Virginia (NCV):

  • On April 21, 1662, William Davies was ordered to pay 550 pounds of tobacco to William Keene, executor of Mary Broughton, his mother. Mary Broughton is the same person as Mary Thorley. She married William Broughton after the death of her first husband, Thomas Keene. (NCV Records).
  • On November 5, 1668, William Keene was paid 100 pounds of tobacco from the County levy “for a wolf shott”. (NCV Order Book 3, P 47)
  • In January of 1670, a judgment was granted to William Morgan, the assignee of “William Keen”, against Francis Roberts, for 3,791 pounds of tobacco. (NCV Order Book 3, P 110).
  • On February 28, 1673, Dominick Rice, William Jollands, “William Keyne” and Abraham Joyce were appointed to appraise the Estate of Robert Hitchcock. NCV Order Book 3, P 174)
  • On January 29, 1675, Thomas Ashton, orphan of Charles Ashton, selected William Keene as his guardian. (NCV Order Book 3, P 228)
  • In March of 1680, “William Keyne” was granted a judgement of 1,302 pounds of tobacco against Joan Rogers. (Is she related to his wife, Elizabeth Rogers?). (NCV Order Book 4, P 86)
  • On February 13, 1686, an oath was made “To measure for Mr. William Keene 55 yards of woolen fleath of ye breadth according to act. The oath was made that it was of their own manufacture and growth”. (NCV Order Book 4, P 226).
  • On May 20, 1685, a petition was granted to Elizabeth Keene for a probate of the last Will and Testament of her deceased husband, William Keene. Wit: Nicholas Owen, Richard Rogers, John Crabb. A copy of the Will is missing from the records. (NCV Order Book 4, P 268).
  • On October 8, 1687, Elizabeth Keene was awarded 20 shillings from Andrew Grigg, commander of the ship “Swan of Belfast” because he caused a pine tree to be fallen on her land and made into a main mast for his ship without her consent. (NCV Order Book 4, P 392)

Burial of William Keene

William Keene is buried on “Cypress Farm” in Northumberland County, Virginia. This site is said to be near the site of the William Keene residence and lies on the left of the road leading from the main highway to Lewisetta at the head of of Garner’s Creek. Garner’s Creek was named for John Garner who owned land across the creek from William Keene. [Is this the same John Garner who married William Keene’s sister, Susanna Keene?]

Over his grave is a horizontal slab of heavy marble which was probably made in England. This marble slab is broken , but the inscription can still be read.

Here lyeth the body of William Keene, the Eldest Son of Thomas and Mary Keene Born in Kent in Maryland the 10th day of March anno Dom. 1642, Who marryed Eliza, the 2. Daughter of John Rogers Gent. and Ellin, his Wife of Northumberland Co. in Virginia by Whome he had two Sons and Four daughters and dyed ye 8 day of Feb. 1684 in ye two and and Fortieth year of his age.

The seven known children of William Keene Sr. and Elizabeth "Eliza" Rogers were:

  • William Keene Jr. was born on September 11, 1665 at St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, VA. He married Ann Therriatt. She was the daughter of William Therriatt of St. Mary’s White Chapel Lancaster County VA. He remarried an unknown person in 1690. He died on October 4, 1700 at St. Stephens Parish, Northumberland, Virginia, at age 35.
  • Female Keene was born circa 1667 at Kent,, Maryland. She married an unknown person in 1688 at Westmoreland, Virginia. She married an unknown person circa 1722 at Westmoreland, Virginia. She died in May 1739 in Cople Parish, Westmoreland, Virginia
  • Elizabeth Keene was born on 16 May 1669 in St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, VA. She married Samuel Samford on 26 March 1689. She died before 1720.
  • Hon John Keene, was born 12 August 1671 in St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, VA; married Elizabeth Oliver.
  • Hannah Keene was born on 4 February 1676 in St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, VA. She married first, Gent Capt John Bushrod, second Col. Willoughby Allerton, and third, John Cooper. She died in 1739 at Cople Parish, Westmoreland, VA.
  • Sarah Keene was born on 7 October 1678 at St Stephen's Parish, Northumberland, VA. She married Capt John Woodbridge in 1705.
  • Anne Keene was born in 1680 at Northumberland, Virginia.
