William James Leader was born on 2 October 1878, in Riverton, Southland, New Zealand, his father, James Francis Leader, was 27 and his mother, Evangeline Tuson, was 22. He married Julia Ann Finnerty on 10 July 1907, in Riverton, Southland, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 3 daughters. He died on 9 November 1938, in his hometown, at the age of 60, and was buried in Riverton, Southland, New Zealand.
