William and Mary Lightner first lived near Greenbank, Pocahontas Co., Virginia (now West Virginia). In 1852 they moved to Back Creek, Highland Co Virginia, Mary died in 1858. After the War Between the States, William returned to West Virginia. ref WT Price.

After the War William returned to West Virginia, and on 13 April 1871 married Elizabeth Wooddell of Greenbank Pocahontas Co WV.

William's will is dated 15 Sept 1885.
