There are a couple of birth years for William; a family history story says that William was a baby of about 5 months old when he was taken sick, died and was buried at Mt. Pisgah. But my family records have his birth year as 1844. If he was 5 months old, Mary would have conceived and had him after being driven from Nauvoo the previous year. It's possible but for a woman getting older in her years and she already had a large family, (William being the youngest of 10)this would have been a huge stress on a woman. I would guess that he was born in 1844 when times were not as harsh. The next oldest sibling was Elizabeth born in 1841. She to was stricken with fever only a month earlier as the family was near Bonapart, Iowa having just crossed the Des Moines River. She died on August 18, 1846 and was buried in a lonely grave on the wayside. Elizabeth was 4.
