William Riley Mitchell married Cordelia Proudfoot on January 11, 1872 in Barbour County, West Virginia. They had 9 children: Icy Dora, Upton Troy, Flora, Delbert, Stella, Myrtle Alice, Roxie, Charlie Sulivan, and Verna.

William Riley was a farmer who owned land on the waters of Hacker near Beverly.

He died of Bright's Disease in June 26, 1896 and was buried in Taylor Drain Cemetery, in Philippi, Barbour County, West Virginia.
