Info from J. Francis via email 4 May 2007: 'My Mother told me that William Parrington Senior, rowed a boat accross the Mersey from Liverpool to Wallasey Island, to start up a ferry business. He was very successful, as Wallasey became a popular seaside town. In the early days he had to use a winch to haul the boat in, on one fatefull day he caught his arm in the winch and it was torn off from the elbow down. After this I believe it was mechanised by steam. The sands could be dangerous as they shifted constantly and could become unstable. Grandma saw a horse and cart go gown in the sands once!' District: Birkenhead On this census, it lists William b. 1828 as having been born in Hensham. This may be a transcription error as the original may also read 'Stoneham'. I wonder if Mary A. Parrington 5y.o. (listed as daughter of William Parrington)on this census is the same person as Rose Ann Parrington 15 y.o. (listed as granddaughter of William Parrington)on the 1901 census for the same address.
