United Empire Loyalist
Notes on William Perry He was born in "Duck Creek", which originally referred to what is called today Smyrna, Delaware and is about twenty-five miles from Queen Anne's Maryland. When Sandra and Richard Thorne exposed William and Priscilla (Walker) Perry's old field stone markers during cemetery renovations in 1984, dates of birth and death were established from the two inscriptions: " D 1826 WP A83 Y" and "D 1830 PP A 78 Y". The graveyard is known as the New Canaan Methodist Cemetery and is located on William Perry's original land grant. This information, taken together with the geographic knowledge that Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania are in close proximity, explained part of the mystery.
I am seeking information on William Perry born in 1743 in Duck Creek in the corner where Pennsylvania/Maryland/Delaware meet. I believe he was christened in Church Hill, Queen Anne's, Maryland in January1743 -- parents John Perry and Mary Clough. William had several brothers, two of whom appear to be Daniel and George. Family stories state that during the American Revolution the brothers were loyal to the revolutionary forces while William remained loyal to the King. William married Priscilla Walker (b. 1752) - place unknown. William and Priscilla landed in Saint John (now New Brunswick, Canada) in1783. Children included William Jr., Daniel, Mary, Nancy, Tamson, Priscilla, John, Wesley and George.
He appears on the muster rolls of Mc Alpin's American Volunteers in August 1777 as a private. This troop was authorized by Sir William Howe, and raised by Mc Alpin for the Burgoyne expedition of 1777. Recruited and raised in the Albany region. Survivors of the Burgoyne campaign were stationed in Quebec, and were eventually amalgamated with the remnants of Peters' and Jessup's corps as the Loyal Rangers in 1781. Some men risked punishment at the hands of their own army to fetch their loved ones from the country. Benjamin GALLOWAY of Delaware received a pass and flag of truce from Brigadier General BIRCH, commandant of New York, and Admiral Sir George Bridges RODNEY of the Royal Navy on October 3, 1780, to peacefully bring in his family as well as the families of William PERRY and Joseph SMITH. Upon arriving in Delaware they acquainted the local militia commanders of their purpose, and copies of their pass and intentions were forwarded to the governor, with assurances that their families would be procured and allowed to leave with them. After waiting four days, their vessel was boarded by Major William Poke with a party of armed men, and the Loyalists were chained and committed to prison. While in prison they were informed that having joined the British, they would stand trial for high treason. After a confinement of 21 days, they broke the prison and were back in New York, without the families, by December 6. http://www.royalprovincial.com/genealogy/fems/fams2.shtml
William Perry (born 1740-3 in Pennsylvania) was the son of Daniel Perry, who came from Wales to North American. William had three brothers, who along with him took part in the Revolutionary War. William was a loyalist who arrived in Saint John with his wife, Priscilla Walker, and their children on the Spring Fleet. They were aboard the ship "Walker." BTW -the brothers were: John, Thomas and George Perry. http://www.cc.utah.edu/~pdp7277/pcno_2-3.html
