About William Pitcairn (Royal Marine)

William Pitcairn was a Royal Marine officer who fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. His father, Major John Pitcairn, also a Royal Marine, was shot during the battle and toppled into William's arms. William cried, "I have lost my father!" Some of the Marines tried to console the young officer, while others, overcome with emotion, moaned. Major Pitcairn was carried back to Boston, and died of his wound within hours. He is buried at the Old North Church in Boston.
