About William Rae

William Rae

Please note that this man is not the same person as William Rea, brewer in Dundee William the brewer is noticed in four pedigrees held ny My Heritage, where he is incorectly identified as the son of John Rae in Little Govan and his wife Jean Mann. Jean Mann's husband John Rae, Coalhewer in Carntyne has no known connection with Dundee, and neither he or William Rae have any known connection with the heritable proprietors of Little Govan.

William Rae here treated is the second child of John Rae, coalhewer in Carntyne, and his wife, Jean Mann. He was born on 1 July 1759 and his baptism was registered at Barony parish in Lanarkshire, Scotland, on 29 July 1759. Barony Baptismal Records His baptismal record reads as follows: "John Rae & Jean Mann in Carntyne had their 3rd child bapt born 1st inst caled Wm Jas & Robt Rae's witts" It would appear that the parish clerk was in error when he identified William as the third child. [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Barony Baptisms, 1750-77, reference OPR.622/2].
