After the Napoleonic wars, the 1820 settlers came to South Africa to settle the Eastern Frontier. Lt William Reed, was a farmer from London. He also had a commission with the Royal Navy. Lt Reed served under Lord Howe aboard a warship the "Thunderer" that fought in the battle of Ushant on the "Glorious 1st of June 1794." He was wounded many times and had his throat cut whilst boarding a French warship. He survived but was obliged to leave the service. • He applied to finance 10 families to go to South Africa as settlers to accompany his own family. However thinking that his application would not be successful he then joined Bailey's Party aboard the "SS Chapman" which was the first 1820 settler ship out from England. It was a very well organised expedition comprising of doctors, lawyers, ministers and other professionals, artisans and labourers. The ship weighed 500 tons which had 271 passengers on board. 5 babies were born on the voyage from England to South Africa. Whooping cough claimed at least 5 children.
