About William Clark Roberts

William C Roberts Posted 03 Oct 2010 by kbcatoe William C. Roberts joined C.S.A. August 20, 1861. He served under Captain C. F. Hinson in the 12th Infintry Division Company E. Company E was formed near Columbia, SC at Lightwood Springs.

William was 23 years old and had only been married to Lousia Horton for 6 months. He was described as 5'10" tall, blue eyes, fair complextion and black hair.

May 12, 1864 after the battle at Spotsylvania Court House in Virginia, he was reported as missing for muster. It was later reported by the North that he had been captured and had been shot during the battle in the right forearm and in the left side of his face and ear. He was put in prision in Washington, DC at the Old Capital Prison, May 27, 1864 he was transferred to Lincoln Hospital. August 12, 1864 he was transferred to Elnira, N.Y. Prision.

November 15, 1864 at Venus Point, Savanna River, William was exchanged along with 3022 others prisioners. He then returned to Virginia to active duty. March 7, 1865 he returned from the military.

He was left with a permanent hearing disability.
