Ross, William Wallace (1828-1889) — of Topeka, Shawnee County, Kan. Born in Huron, Erie County, Ohio, December 25, 1828. Great-grandson-in-law of Simon Frye; brother of Edmund Gibson Ross; brother-in-law of Edwin Mortimer Hewins; father-in-law of Meredith Pinxton Snyder. Republican. Delegate to Kansas state constitutional convention, 1857; delegate to Republican National Convention from Kansas, 1860; mayor of Topeka, Kan., 1865-66. Died, of stomach cancer, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif., June 5, 1889. Original interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Los Angeles, Calif.; reinterment in 1924 at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Hollywood, Los Angeles, Calif.

Father-in-law of former Los Angeles mayor Meredith Snyder. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention from Kansas and was delegate to the Kansas state constitutional convention. In December 1855 Ross and his wife moved to Topeka, Kansas to help John Speer print the "Kansas Tribune," one of the first newspapers published in Kansas. In 1961 Ross was appointed government agent to the Pottawatomie Indians at St. Marys Mission where he served for four years. He made a treaty with the Indians and set up a settlement and later a town near the Indians was names Rossville in his honor. In 1865 he was elected mayor of Topeka, eventually moving to California where he died of cancer. Originally interred at Evergeen Cemetery in Los Angeles, Ross was moved to his present location in 1924.
