Will Scallon, full name William Simon Scallon

Ackley World Journal, Dec. 22, 1938:
Will Scallon died at his home three miles northeast of Ackley Friday evening, Dec. 16, 1938, as a result of heart trouble; he had been ill about three months. Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. The Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Nicholas Steffen, assisted by Rev. Father S. Luby — both of Columbia College, Dubuque, and by Rev. Father J.J. Murtagh, pastor of St. Mary's church. The mass servers, nephews of the deceased, were: James Scallon, Wilfrid and Robert McGreevy. Serving as pallbearers were the following friends of the deceased: Enno Thieben, Wm. Diamond, John Fahey, Chas. P. Roth, John Lindemann, Frank Hayes (New Hartford). Interment was in St. Mary's cemetery.
Mr. Scallon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Scallon, pioneer residents of this vicinity, was born at Ackley Sept. 3, 1884. On June 28, 1911, he was united in marriage with Miss Laura Steffen. Eight children were born to this union —namely, Harold, Hugh, Raymond, Maurice, Leo, Kathleen, Jeanette, and Nicholas, all of whom are at home.
Mr. Scallon's father passed away in 1901, but his mother lives to mourn his departure.
The deceased is also survived by his wife; his eight children above named; by five brothers—Hurbert and Hugh of Monango, N. Dak., Joe of Wing, N. Dak., Fred of Canby, Oregon, and Louis of Ackley; by four sisters. Mrs. H.B. Hetzler of Riceville, Iowa; Mrs. Pat Burns of New Hampton; Miss Jeanette Scallon and Mrs. F.J. McGreevy of Ackley.
Mr. Scallon was a man of sterling quality — a lover of home and family. His geniality made for him many friends, who sincerely mourn his loss.
The family have the sympathy of the community in their bereavement.
Among those from out-of-town who were in Ackley Tuesday, having come to attend the funeral services held for Will Scallon, were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hayes of New Hartford; Mrs. Kausman and daughter Eleanor of Owatonna, Minn.; Mark Kausman and son Gerald of Minneapolis; Frank McGivney, Iowa Falls, Ben Blake, Belmond; Clarence Austin, Ames.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 10 2024, 2:59:49 UTC
